Fashion Vixen: MTV 2011 VMAs

By Lara Glaister

Ladies played a leading role in the 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Adele all walked away with multiple Moon Men, while a booty-shaking Beyonce stole the show by patting her belly and announcing that she and hubby Jay-Z are expecting a Babyonce!

Awards ceremonies always cook up crazy fashion and this year’s VMAs were no exception. The red carpet rocked, and there were a few obvious trends: cross-dressing, Japanime cartoon creations and copycats.

Cross-Dressers: Lady Gaga showed up as a dude by guido-ing it up as her alter ego, Jo Calderone, donning My Cousin Vinny-esque male attire throughout the entire evening. Beyonce borrowed from the boys in quite the stylish manner by sporting a Dolce & Gabbana tux during her performance of “Love on Top.” Guy gender-benders included 30 Second to Mars lead singer Jared Leto in a black frock, Russell Brand in a stylish sequined scarf and Justin Bieber looking lady-like in a fitted woman’s jacket and chains.

Japanime Cartoons: Katy Perry created fireworks in a modern kimono dress by Dior complete with cherry blossom colored hair and a traditional Wagasa, a paper Geisha-like umbrella. Nicki Minaj channeled her inner Harajuku heroine/Candy Raver by sporting attire created by Japanese designers such as Shojono Tom. The designer created Minaj’s eye-mask that she wore over her mouth (yes, we’re speechless too), the giraffe-necked doll she carried and her Fraggle Rock-like socks. Gwen Stefani circa 2004, anyone?

Copy Cats: Throughout the 2011 VMAs, we noticed artists mimicking or really stepping up to the fashion plate by pushing the sartorial envelope à la Lady Gaga.  Whether it was Katy Perry sporting geisha-gear and a cube of fromage for a hat, Nicki Minaj coloring outside of the couture lines or Jessie J walking the red-carpet in crutches reminiscent of Gaga’s “Paparazzi” days. It appears that the queen of all things haute, Lady Gaga herself, had the last laugh by copying none other than K.D. Lang in masculine trousers and a T-shirt.

And the VMA Fashion Vixen award goes to… Mama-to-be Beyonce, glowing in her orange Lanvin gown!
